Public Health and Informatics

Faculty

C. Ed Hsu (pronounced 'she') joined the University of Maryland faculty in 2004. Dr. Hsu received his graduate training in health informatics (MS), health management and policy (PhD), and health services organization (MPH) from the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center. He is Assistant Professor of Public Health Informatics in the Department of Public and Community Health, University of Maryland College Park Campus.

Dr. Hsu has experience teaching health information systems, advanced health informatics, GIS in public health, and health administration graduate-level courses; supervising student theses and delivering EpiInfo/Epimap workshops to health department workers. His recent research activities focus on the application of information technology, particularly the geographic information systems (GIS) in the improvement of health surveillance and public health preparedness, and in the study of health disparities. He has led, co-led and consulted for more than 10 grants or contracts in public health emergency preparedness and health disparities research funded by the federal, state and county departments of health in the past three years. He published peer-reviewed articles and co-authored a book chapter in public health informatics and preparedness, health disparities and health risk assessment and modeling using spatiotemporal analysis. He serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Health Information Systems and Informatics.

Dr. Hsu holds adjunct appointment with the University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences. He serves on the University Senate on behalf of the Department of Public and Community Health, and on the State Measuring Health Disparities Committee of the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities.
